Went shopping. Bought shorts at Goodwill and new cleats. Went out to see "Batman Returns". |
Got up and got ready to go to Boulder. Rode up with Chris (Eisenstadt?) up to his friend's house in Colorado Springs and arrived in time to play a little ultimate with the C. Springs crowd. |
Got up at 6:00 and drove up to Boulder for the Boulder 4th of July Ultimate Classic tournament. Beat Santa Fe 15-7, beat Kansas City 15-4, beat D-Block (Boulder III) 15-2. Hung out at the Clarion hotel and had Thai food for dinner. |
Beat Breckinridge 15-10, beat Old And In The Way (Boulder masters) 15-10, beat Vail 15-7. Played Minnesota in the B Division quarterfinals and beat them 15-6. Went to John Bunzli's house for a cookout and spent the night in his backyard. |
Woke up with some kind of bug or spider bite on my eyelid, but the swelling went down by the time we started playing. We beat Houston in the semis 16-9, then lost to Kansas City 19-17 in the final. Drove home and got back at 2:00 AM. |
Drove over to Subia. Van vapor-locked. Drove down to the museum and signed a contract extension for the exhibit i was working on. |
Biked down to the museum, then out to Subia. Went to see "White Men Can't Jump" for $1.50. |
Worked at the museum and took the screen-cleaning machine apart to clean it, but it still didn't work very well. |
Babysat Charlie all afternoon, then played summer league ultimate in a torrential rainstorm and lost the game. |
Knowing that i was most likely going to be hired full time at Subia, i decided to use one of my last free week-days to hike up to Sandia Peak. I got up at 6:00, drove to Elena Gallegos park, and hiked up the Piño Trail to the upper tram house with Deb's dog Friday. I brought my unicycle along and rode up about 30% of the trail, and down about 80% of the trail. My leg muscles were aching by the time i got back, and Friday ("ranger dog!") was exhausted. I passed a park ranger just before i got back to the parking lot and she seemed like she was about to give me a ticket for having a unicycle on the trail and having a dog off leash, but she let me go. When i got back down into town i bought tickets to see They Might Be Giants. |
Played ultimate. Sean Ostrowski, who i played with in college, was there that day, in town visiting. |
Worked on the map and program for the Albuquerque Cuervo ultimate tournament, then played ultimate. |
Went down to the museum to print stuff out. Watched "The Commitments" on video. |
Felt sick. Did crossword puzzles all day. |
Worked for Manpower at the local Girl Scouts office (free cookies!). For some reason i was thinking about the movie "The Butcher's Wife" that day and i came home to find out that Deb had rented it, so we watched it. |
Worked at the Girl Scouts again. Biked out to Subia to pick up a check. Played summer league ultimate and won. |
Worked 10-1/2 hours at Subia. |
Played ultimate. Started to paint Njal's truck, but he caught me at it. Went out to see "Wayne's World" for $1. |
Played guitar, worked on my Mac, played ultimate, then went down to El Rey to see They Might Be Giants. Debo, Marty (Deb's boyfriend), and i were all going to the TMBG show. We had heard that they were doing a thing during the show called "stump the band" where they took requests from the audience and then tried to play whatever song they got. Debo said that she wanted to see if she could get them to play "The Beat Goes On" by Sonny & Cher. I don't think that i had any great ideas for tunes. The show was great. They opened with "Space Suit", the last song off of the "Apollo 18" album. Sid Straw (i think), who was the opening act, sang along on "The Guitar", their twisted version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". "Particle Man" and "Anna Ng" got the best audience responses. Then came the "stump the band" part. All of the band members came up to the front of the stage and the audience started yelling out songs. They confered for a bit and one of the Johns came up to a mic and said "Well, you've stumped the band. Somebody wanted "Brick House", but we're not gonna play that." They continued the talking with the audience. I was about 30 or 40 feet back from the stage at that point but Deb and Marty had pushed up closer. I guess that they were right up there next to the stage because the drummer suddenly bounced up and corralled the other band members together, then John announced "OK, we're gonna play 'The Beat Goes On' by Sonny & Cher." And they did an admirably fine job! |
Went to work down at the Girl Scouts, but their computer was down so i didn't do anything. |
"What the hell did i do?" |
Helped line the fields for the upcoming ultimate tournament. |
Lined fields some more. Awesome thunderclouds today. The tournament discs arrived! |
Worked at Subia. Dan and Suzy Lubar arrived from Colorado and spent the night. |
Albuquerque Jose Cuervo Qualifier Tournament: Lost to St. Louis, beat Las Cruces, lost to Burbank, beat Santa Fe, beat Dallas. 17 Reasons Why played at the party at Spectators Sports Bar. |
Got woken up by a phone call at 9:10 and just made it to the fields in time for the first game. Lost to Alvin (Texas) in the quarterfinals. Watched the rest of the tournament and made my invested money back on disc sales. |
Worked at the Girl Scouts. |
Worked at Subia, skipped ultimate practice. |
Worked at Subia until 2:30, then went down to Murphy's Mule Barn to be an extra in the TV movie "Overdrive" (when it aired it was called "Revenge On The Highway"), starring Stacey Keach. I was there until about 2:00 AM and pretty much only only had to do one thing. Get up from a table at the restaurant and walk out. I wasn't in the final cut though. |
Slept in, then drove to work at Subia. Played summer league ultimate and we were ahead 14-10 but then lost 16-14, arrgh! |
Biked to Subia and worked. Had dinner at Dave & Moira North's house with their son, Daniel, Eric Edgerton, and his daughter Melina. We watched "The Jungle Book" after dinner. |
