Drove my van down to the museum to work because i thought that it was going to rain. It didn't. The van stalled and wouldn't start, grrr...

Worked at the museum.

Ditto.

1234567

Played ultimate. Cleaned out my van.

Got up early and called Manpower temp services, but they had no work for me. I don't remember exactly how it came about, but i heard from someone that Subia, which was a graphic arts service bureau in town, may be needing some extra help, so i called over there and talked to Marc Orchant about a job.

891011121314

Got up early and called Manpower. Nothin'. Went down to the museum and cleaned some silk screens. Played some box ultimate with a few folks that evening.

891011121314

Up at 7:30 again. Worked on my Mac for a while and wrote some letters. Dan Kahn came over and we watched "Terminator II" on video that evening (and kept getting interrupted with phone calls!).

891011121314

Got ready to go to San Diego. It was a Thursday night and George Bonet, Nathan Stalker, Doug Furcht, and i left in my van (after it wouldn't start for about 15 minutes initially) at about 11:00 PM and headed west. We camped at a cold rest stop on the Arizona/NM border, sleeping in the van or on the ground.

Got up the next morning and drove toward San Diego. As we were driving along through the woods south of Flagstaff, someone complained of smelling gas. We pulled over and sure enough, there was a hole in one of the lines going to the carburator and a steady stream of gas was spurting onto the engine cowling. Fortunately i had some spare hose, and i made the repairs while the other guys had a snowball fight.

Drove through Sedona, Jerome, Prescott, Blythe...

Somewhere along the AZ/CA border, i was riding in the back and i kept hearing this strange scraping/pinging noise. When we stopped for gas i looked under the van and saw that the tailpipe had fallen off and it was just hooked onto the rear axle and dragging along the road. We took it off and lashed it to the back of the van.

The van performed admirably and we arrived at my sister Sarah's house in San Diego and had a giant pizza for dinner.

We arrived at the tournament in the morning to looks of awe that we actually drove that thing all the way from NM. We played some California teams then i drove the van back to Sarah & Nick's, with Rod's wagon following because Nate and Doug were going to stay with the rest of the team but had left their stuff at my sister's. When we got on the highway, the rooftop carrier on Rod's car flew open and they had to stop to close it. They got their stuff and headed back to Del Mar and i had dinner with Sarah & Nick.

We beat UCLA in the B-pool quarters, beat Burbank in the semis, then lost to Long Beach in the final 17-13. We all hung out for a while watching the A pool finals, then slept at Sarah & Nick's.

We got up and went down to the beach, then headed back to Albuquerque, this time on a more southerly route, through Yuma. In eastern CA we drove through an area that was packed with butterflies and they smacked all over the windshield. George put his face right against the glass, waiting for me to drive right into one. A big one smacked about 6 inches above his eyes.

Near the AZ/CA border we smelled gas again and determined at our next gas stop that we'd forgotten to put the gas cap back on at the last gas stop. I stuffed a piece of foam rubber in the spout.

And as if three bad things happening weren't bad enough, just south of Phoenix some wiring from the battery to the cigarette lighter (and hence, our radio) melted and started burning. We had to bail out for a while to clear the cabin of smoke.

In the end we all made it back OK (at about 3:00 AM), but i don't think that Nate, Doug, or George ever want to take a road trip in my vehicle ever again.endpics(); ?>
