The dead transaxle. I was about to leave Shunk and i stopped by the sawmill to get some scrap wood, only to find that my truck wouldn't go in reverse. I drove back up to Scott Quail's garage and he discovered that one of the bolts holding one of the rear brakes had come out so the whle brake assembly was acting like a ratchet. The wheel would turn forwards, but not backwards. He tightened everything up and i drove home.

That night, Teco couldn't climb the stairs to get upstairs and i had to carry him up to my bedroom. Looking back on this, it seems likely that he suffered a stroke some time that day, since he was fine that morning. He was really weak on one side and his head drooped to that side for a couple weeks, but after about a month, his strength returned.

I was really worried about Teco when i was at work that day, and his condition wasn't much improved that evening. I took a few pictures of him thinking that they might be the last. It was a few days before he could get around without stumbling, but he slowly got better.

Artsy dogs.

Since teco was having trouble with stairs, i built a ramp over the back staircase. Seera eventually picked it up, but Teco never used it.

Walked the dogs along the tracks, and a train came by. Seera was sitting on a pile of railroad ties next to me and Teco was at my feet, until i looked up to wave at the conductor as the engine passed by. Next thing i know, Teco's sprinting out of the way of the front wheel of the train. I don't think he ever heard it. Luckily he got out of the way.

Drove down to Littleton to Edna & Greg's. Teco and Seera got to meet their dog Neeka and they all basically got along after some growling and one scuffle between Seera and Neeka.

I borrowed Greg's GPS and let it guide me into Boston to The Paradise, where i went to see Mission of Burma. I ran into Roger Miller at the concession table, which seems to be always where i see him. It was a good show:

  • Playland
  • Peking Spring
  • Nu Disco
  • Eyes of Men
  • Anti-Aircraft Warning
  • Academy Fight Song
  • Execution
  • Devotion
  • Max Ernst
  • That's When I Reach for My Revolver
  • Outlaw
  • Fame and Fortune
  • This is Not a Photograph
  • Red
  • All World Cowboy Romance
Encore:
  • Methodist Church (with guest keyboardist from the opening band Cul de Sac. Not a Burma song.)
  • 2wice
  • Spider's Web
  • Let Yourself Go
  • Donna Sumeria
After the show i was talking to Roger and someone standing right next to me asked Roger if he remembered playing a show at Earlham College. I turned to the guy and said "Hi, i'm Adam." He looked at me confusedly and said "Pacey." "I remember you," i said. Pacey was a couple classes below me and actually the party that Roger went to the night he played the show at Earlham was at Pacey's house. Freaky.

I got home at about 1:00 AM.

Got up, took a shower, then took the dogs over to some nice trails through the woods that
ended up at Long Pond, where Teco nearly took a swim.

Then i drove over to CA and wandered around the campus for the afternoon. I talked to one of the
grounds crew and met his dog Lucy, who was an employee of CA and was in charge of keeping the
geese off of the playing fields. Very cool. I also saw my sister Nina's newly published book
on display in the library.

After a while, i ran into Don and his kids and then Damon and Ned and a whole bunch of other people.
We alll hung out and had dinner.

After dinner, Damon, Ned, Derek, and i drove back into Boston (i remembered the way from the
previous night) to see Mission of Burma at the Paradise, first time since 1983 for them, second
night in a row for me. We arrived while the opening band A.K.A.C.O.D. was playing, and they had
a really cool sound. Drummer, bass player/vocalist, and sax player. I saw Roger out in a reserved
box watching the show and said hello.

Another good show, picking up right where the last one left off:

  • Laugh the World Away
  • Progress
  • Forget
  • OK/No Way
  • Secrets
  • Train
  • Trem Two
  • New Nails
  • Dead Pool
  • Learn How
  • Mica
  • Weatherbox
  • The Ballad of Johnny Burma
  • Einstein's Day
  • Fun World
  • That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate
Encore:
  • The Creeper (with a guest vocalist. Again, not a Burma song.)
  • Devotion
  • Anti-Aircraft Warning
Encore:
  • 2wice
  • Spider's Web
  • Let Yourself Go
After the show i introduced my friends to Roger, then we dropped Damon off at his house in Brookline. I got home at about 1:30 AM.

Got up late, drove in to CA and hung out with classmates all day. Played a really lazy game of ultimate with other alums (photo of me barely covering Grattan Baldwin taken by Lisa Latham) Damon showed "Drug Addiction at CA: A Serious Documentary" at dinner (photo of me and Don taken by Damon, who also took the photo of me in the funky vehicle), and Jean Morrow showed some other student films that she'd digitized. That night our class once again won the party, finally breaking up at 1:15 AM.

Brought the dogs in to CA and chatted with people at brunch, then went over to the Nicolson's house for a lunch gathering. I stopped by Edna & Greg's again before hitting the road back up to VT.

Chomp, chomp.
